TAKING IELTS AND TOEFL EXAM

There are two main English language tests accepted by universities around the world, IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). But the big question that faces students is; which one is better?

The similaritiesBoth are English language tests aimed at pre-university students planning to make the step to higher education. Both evaluate how well you can combine your listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. You have to pay a fee to take both tests, for both it can vary depending on where exactly you take the test but expect to pay between $150 to $250.

The differencesAlthough both tests ostensibly focus on the same thing, they do so in different ways, which is why so many students want to know which is better (and even more commonly, which is easier). One of the main differences is the speaking part of the test. For IELTS you are required to take this with an IELTS examiner face to face. For TOEFL the speaking test consists of six questions which you answer into a microphone. These are recorded and sent to an examiner to mark.

The scoring system is also different, with IELTS rating between 0 and 9, with halfway points in between. TOEFL gives a more numerical SAT-type grade, totalling your scores from all the areas. This gives an insight into another key difference. TOEFL is administered by the Educational Testing Service, a non-profit US based organisation, and conducts its test according to US English. IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and IDP Education Australia, and conducts its test in UK English. While the differences are not as great as some assume, accents and spelling variations can cause a problem for some students.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT STUDYING IN CANADA - INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

In my travels around the world on behalf of university and college members of the Canadian University Application Centre, the misperceptions and flat-out untruths that are told and believed about studying abroad and studying in Canada are many and varied.

These perceptions mislead and cause ill-informed choices by students and their families.

These mistakes can be costly in terms of finances, time and effort, and can curtail academic, career and other aspirations.

Here are ten important things that international students should know – they might dispel some of those misperceptions.

1. Almost all universities in Canada are public universities

Most colleges and universities in Canada are also publicly funded and accredited.
This is in sharp contrast to the United States and other common study-abroad destinations. It is also often in sharp contrast to the international student’s country of origin. In those countries, the quality of the institutions and the value of the degrees offered can vary.
An undergraduate degree earned at any public institution in Canada will be recognized around the world. A college diploma earned at a public college will be recognized by Canadian employers as having provided specific and valuable skills and training.

2. International student tuition in Canada is expensive in real terms, but inexpensive relative to the many other countries

International student tuition will vary across institutions, but the majority of undergraduate tuition rates are between $12,000 and $18,000 per full academic year.
Tuition in the United States is often double or triple of the average tuition in Canada.
Even a $20,000 scholarship to a US institution is not quite as appealing when you realize that the balance owing is still greater than the full tuition cost of a year at a Canadian university.

3. Canada offers students the opportunity to work in Canada while they study and after they successfully complete their studies and graduate

Only Canada offers the broad range of work opportunities granted to bona fide and academically successful international students.

4. It is relatively easy to gain admission to under-graduate programs in Canada

In India, students often require board exam results in excess of 95 per cent – and sometimes higher – for admission to top Indian universities. A student with 90 per cent will struggle to find admission to their institution of choice in India, but that same student is a likely scholarship award recipient and is even a likely candidate for competitive entry programs like Engineering in Canada.

Five Reasons to study abroad.

The question “Why study abroad?” is one of the issues explored in our recently released report on Trends in International Student Mobility, based on global surveys of graduate degree applicants in the last five years. The report examines some of the key motivations and priorities for students applying for a master’s or a PhD, and particularly those with an interest in studying outside of their own country. Here’s an overview of some of the most common answers respondents gave to the question “Why study abroad?”

1. Study at a university with a strong international reputation

A major motivation for many international students is the prospect of studying at a university with a strong international reputation. This underlies the continued popularity of study destinations such as the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Germany, which boast large numbers of universities that are well-known and respected worldwide. As more institutions succeed in growing their international reputations, there’s now even greater choice than ever before for prospective international students for whom reputation really matters.

2. Experience life in a different culture

For many international students, the opportunity to spend an extended period of time immersed in a culture other than their own is a huge part of the appeal of studying abroad. This might simply be for the pleasure that comes from encountering new experiences and perspectives, or it could be that students are already looking ahead to their graduate careers; international experience and intercultural skills are highly valued by many employers. Some students may have a specific destination or culture in mind, while others may be ready to explore pretty much anywhere new.
